ART of the Table 2013
The inspiration for our design came from designers Marchesa. The china by Marchesa is so glamourous that we decided to place it in the context of a celebration dinner, that takes design cues from the Great Gatsby.

S+D INTERIOR DESIGN TIPS: GLAMOUR
Both Joanna and Michael love glamorous spaces, materials, objects. The design of this penthouse on the Upper West Side of New York City was designed for living with glamour. Custom chairs by Holly Hunt, walnut and mirror polished steel coffee table by Tod Von Mertens, slipper chairs covered in Romo satin by Modern Living Supplies, chandeliers custom made by Minotti in LA.
S+D INTERIOR DESIGN TIPS: DOUBLE CHAISES - NO NEED TO SHARE
For a master bedroom in New York City we designed the room to have his and hers chaises from Minotti. No fighting necessary — both have plenty of relaxing room to stretch out. We thought that sharing this jewel of a polished mirror drink table wouldn’t cause to much of a fight. We designed the custom walnut built in to house a collection of books and some additional storage.
S+D INTERIOR DESIGN TIPS: MODERN CASUAL
For this New York City apartment, the living, dining and media areas are all open to each other, so we wrapped the two interior walls with custom Italian veneer by Poliform. The rich wood tone gives a nice balance to the mostly glass exterior, and eco friendly bamboo floors and cabinetry. B&B Italia sofa in cashmere was chosen for the space, as well as a David Weeks chandelier. The custom rug by Tai Ping is an abstract branch design, in warm grays and chocolate brown tones set on a cream ground.
S+D INTERIOR DESIGN TIPS: DETAILS CAN BE SUBTLE
Some times design details are obvious, but not all design needs to shout to get your attention. For our custom design of this steel table with glass top, we were inspired by the strapping on fine luggage. The chairs, which we picked up at Ralph Lauren, share the same concept: leather strapping over a steel frame, upholstered in a light chocolate linen. The look has its roots in classic men’s wear, which is complemented by a polished tray of vintage cocktail shakers and decanters.
S+D INTERIOR DESIGN TIPS: MODERN AND SEXY
The living area we designed for this apartment right on the Highline is modern and edited, yet achieves a warm and sexy vibe with the use of warm and cool grays, and charcoals. The apartment also features luxurious details like this custom smoked coffee table signed by the artist Aaron R. Thomas, cashmere pillows, and art by New York photographer Jessie Harris. The custom made rug is dyed cowhide from Argentina, by Grand Splendid, the small prints are vintage Italian, the pendants are designed by Roll & Hill, the custom sofa is by DesignLush.
S+D INTERIOR DESIGN TIPS: SET THE TABLE
If you live in a Big City like New York, there’s a good chance your dining room is near the kitchen. In our design for this 1 bedroom apartment in Chelsea we keep the same color concept throughout, steel, smoked glass, charcoal alpaca velvet chairs, the other side has a bench covered in Stark vinyl. Keep the table setting simple, white china, white linen napkins, clear glass wear will make the table seem les crowed because you can see through it. And try bud vases with small white flowers rather than a arrangement.
We kept the color palette of the cabinetry walls all tonal grays so even though its in the kitchen area it flows with the whole apartment.
S+D THINGS WE LOVE: MANTIQUES MODERN
The name conjures up a collection of super masculine “real men” items but the shop located in New york’s Chelsea district is filled with treasures from Gio Ponti, vintage Hermes, Miguel Berrocal, and puzzle sculptures like this one titled Mini David. It's like the curiosity cabinet you always wish you had.

S+D THINGS WE LOVE: MIXOLOGIST FOR HOME
Lets be frank, we all have a budget, and often as designers we need to mix high and low to stay on budget track — but still we want big style. Many second and third homes have a budget that reflects this mixologist point of view.
We love the Element concrete coffee table from CB2. We used two of them side by side in a beach front home; the finish is tough, and the look is modern with an earthy vibe.
S+D THINGS WE LOVE: Indoor or Out - Sculptural Chairs
We love this chair from DESIGNLUSH, designed by Kenneth Cobonpue. It’s the Lolah lounge chair, and may be used indoors or out.
We used the white finish for a beach house, and located several just inside large glass doors, looking out to the water. So when you finish with the beach you can plop down on the chairs and have a drink, or 5 …. no worrying about ruining the upholstery — it's all outdoor friendly.

S+D GARDEN DESIGN TIPS: Kitchen gardens are beautiful too!
The sweet taste of ripe vine tomatoes, picking your own basil, the thrill of digging up those exotic purple fingerling potatoes you planted, are what a kitchen garden is all about. Making it beautiful, and practical to maintain goes hand in hand. In this design we took are clues from the French tradition of the “Potager” by adding order and beauty into the kitchen garden.
This layout also makes it easy to maintain by dividing plots with surrounding pathways, so that you never have to step into the garden to pick, prune…and….well…eat!
S+D INTERIOR DESIGN TIPS Make over
I think that I speak for most of us when I say “We all love a make over.” Here’s a country kitchen we designed, keeping the general layout ‑ the doors and windows all stayed the same, but everything else had to go. Even the stone floor is new.
I love a white kitchen: white cabinets, white wainscoting, white doors and windows. Try adding interest with a rustic stone floor and an island with a wood counter to provide contrast.

Blending
style directives inside and out can have outstanding results. As human beings we have multi-faceted
personalities …
so, why not our environments?
This garden was designed to blend the backdrop of a 1700’s carriage
house with a structured,
formal garden footprint. We designed this arch with informal, found fieldstone,
and created a site line to the front
upper garden that has the effect of making
you want to explore.
The whole effect is warm and friendly, even though the layout is ordered.
